Our Blog

We are a year 5/6 (9-10 year olds) class from Bairds Mainfreight Primary School in Auckland, NZ.

You can see some of our learning that took place in Room 12 in 2010 and 2011.

NB: I have moved to a new school now so this blog is no longer active. You are still welcome to comment and look at the great fun we had over the past two years.

Thank you for all the lovely comments :)

the learning tent

Here is our Learning Tent
We are working in the tent. It is hot inside, but it helps us to concentrate because we dont get disturbed by what other people are doing.

We are going to shoot our news show from the tent so that there are no distracting things in the background. We wonder what the sound will sound like.

The Oak Tree - Day 1 photographer Nelson

Today is the first day of Spring!

We are going to take a picture of our marvelous tall old oak tree that has been at our school for years. We will be taking a picture of it every day. We are hoping that we can put all the pictures into a movie so that you can see it grow!

Jayden's personal writing

My First Cut

By Jayden

Crash! Sling slice flop, aaahaaaah, blood racing down my leg like hungry gazelles reaching the tip of my toes. Everyone rushing down the stairs trying to see what happened. Blood spreading everywhere. It was like a blood pool. You could see the inside of my leg. My cousin laughing at me. My skin stuck on the carpet. All the pain and blood.

Round and round and round the bandage goes. I tip-toed up the stairs. Scrubber scrubber, scrubber everyone trying to get the blood stain off the carpet. Bounding, bending, blood spreading everywhere.

I could feel the cold blood surrounding me and whispering to me. The cold blood pool was like the water in Antarctica

Persistence

Horton Hatches the Egg!

Horton is our symbol for persistence because:

When he was cold in the winter he stayed on the egg.
He stood up for himself when his friends teased him and he kept going
He looked after the egg and kept his promise
Even when he felt sea-sick he never gave up
He refused to run away even when he was feeling scared
He made it his mission to keep the egg warm
When he saw his egg hatch he felt proud, special and happy.

Maisy is our symbol for what is NOT persistent because

Said she needed a rest and she gave up
She played in the sun
She ate ice-cream instead of doing her job
She went to the circus
She wanted the egg back after someone else had done the hard work

March 1st News

We were shocked to hear about the Earth-quake in Chile and the Tsunami scare. It reminded us of the Samoan Tsunami last year and, more recently, the cyclone that hit the Cook Islands.

Oral Language

Responding to the Herald article on the Shark Attack

We are developing our oral language skills. We are using the webcam so that we can reflect upon our own oral language. As the year goes on we will all be able to see how our oral language and presentation skills progress.

Water Slides - Team Building

Mrs Jorgensen set us a challenge.

We had to construct a miniture water-slide. We tested it with a marble. We had to make sure that the marble made it to the bottom without falling off the side.
We had to use many of our Key Competencies to do this. For example we had to "Manage Ourselves", "Participate and Contribute", Use our "Thinking Skills" and "Relate to Others"
