Our Blog

We are a year 5/6 (9-10 year olds) class from Bairds Mainfreight Primary School in Auckland, NZ.

You can see some of our learning that took place in Room 12 in 2010 and 2011.

NB: I have moved to a new school now so this blog is no longer active. You are still welcome to comment and look at the great fun we had over the past two years.

Thank you for all the lovely comments :)

World Cup Facts

This week Mrs T-J was away in Christchurch so we are doing some research on the world cup.

Our mission is to make a mini-world cup report about the countries in NZs World Cup group (Group F).

We can work on our own or in 2s or 3s.

We are presenting our project as a poster.

It must include the following:

What are the names of the countries NZ played in the 2010 world cup?

Using the Atlas’s what do the flags look like (colours etc) for these countries

Using the internet (or your parents knowledge for homework) What were the scores of the games

NZ vs Italy

NZ vs Slovakia

NZ vs Paraguay

Complete the word-search and include it in our poster

Find any other interesting facts and include them in our poster.

Some Facts We Have Found So Far are ...

There was not world cup in 1942 and 1946 because of the World war (Rionne via Emma)

David Beckham's Favourite food in the USA is Chicken and Waffles (Wiremu)

I learned that NZ drew all their games in this world Cup (Mele)

Brazil got to get the original World Cup Trophy because they won it 3 times in a row (Rionne)

The Allwhite uniform was made by Nike (Tuseilda)

Art intensive learning.

Shannon finds a how-to-sketch programme (he found ferns and kiwis)

Yesterday we learned to use chalk before we paint, because when you paint over pencil you can still see the lines but when we paint over chalk it melts.

Today we were researching on the computers for kiwiana symbols. We enjoyed looking at the beautiful pictures and symbols of kiwiana. We saw Hokey Pokey ice cream, Pavlova, Kiwi fruit, Kiwi, L&P bottles, gumboots, jandals, buzzy bee, rugby ball, pohutakawa trees, marae, paua shells and the NZ map.

We found a movie on how to draw a kiwi, and how to draw a silver fern.

We learnt how to make cold colours and warm colours in our dye wash. The warm colours were red and orange and the cold ones were blue and green.

Art Intensive

This week we are doing an Art Intensive. We are learning about Aboriginal Art. The theme of our Art Intensive is Kiwiana so we are mixing them together.

We have made a dye wash for our backgrounds and we are learning (by making HEAPS of mistakes) how we would like our final piece to look.
