Our Blog

We are a year 5/6 (9-10 year olds) class from Bairds Mainfreight Primary School in Auckland, NZ.

You can see some of our learning that took place in Room 12 in 2010 and 2011.

NB: I have moved to a new school now so this blog is no longer active. You are still welcome to comment and look at the great fun we had over the past two years.

Thank you for all the lovely comments :)

Child Labour / Labor

Today we discussed Child Labour in the context of chocolate production.
We discovered that:

Child labour means 'children that work'
They have no running water
They use Machetes and Hazardous equipment
Their houses are poor
The chocolate people tell lies
They hadn't eaten chocolate before
They have no electricity
They work hard (6am - 4pm)
They are our age
They have no sanitation
They dont see their families
They are not allowed to go to school

Roots of Empathy - Communciation

Today Tanya came to school and talked to us about communication.

She read us a story about a girl who could not hear without her hearing aides. The story was called "A Screaming Kind of Day". The girl in the story felt frustrated with her brother and mother because she felt like they didn't understand her.

Babies communicate without using words. Nursery Rhymes are a good way to teach babies how to communicate.

While Tanya was here we made up some of our own Nursery Rhymes for Blake...

Here are some of our first attempts

Skyping

Today we are going to Skype a school in Geelong Australia. We have been looking at their blog this year and have noticed that there are small differences between NZ and Australia. We will be asking them some questions and making some statements.

Check out their latest news.

Immersion - Where is it from?

How is a cartoon made?

What do you think that this means? What questions do you have about this?

Nooroa's Alien Story

Last night I was in my room and then I saw a bright light out my window. I was surprised. It was my first time seeing an immense alien ship on the ground taking my family away from me. I was sad. I had noone to play with me. I was all by myself at home crying in my room. I had noone to cook for me.

Financial Literacy

We are learning some financial words before we start our inquiry of "The Real Cost of Pets" (FIO)

Here are the ones we know:
NEEDS mean items you must have
WANTS what you would like but dont really need
DECISION selecting a choice
GOALS what you want to acheive
INCOME - Money you earn
CHOICES - Options you have before making a decision
SAVINGS - money you put away

Here are the tricky ones:

DEBT - what you owe other people
LOAN - money you borrow and have to pay back
CONSEQUENCES - what happens after a decision you make

We had a discussion about PROFIT - the children wondered if PROFIT was ILLEGAL

What do you think???

Where is it from?

This term you are going to be exploring many of your favourite things.

It could be your favourite computer game, your favourite sport, your favourite food, your favourite ANYTHING!

Once you have chosen the thing you are going to explore you are going to find out for me:

WHERE IS IT FROM???

WHO MADE IT???

HOW MUCH DID THEY GET PAID???

WHAT IS THEIR WORK PLACE LIKE???

WHAT COULD THEIR HOME BE LIKE???

How can you tell other people about what you have discovered?

IS IT STILL YOUR FAVOURITE THING???
